Foundation Portfolio - Preliminary Task

We have now started the begining of the foundation portfolio task, and for our first assignment we have to produce a college or school magazine based on the codes and conventions of magazines. We firstly looked at how the media concepts could be applied to our magazine. We looked at the acronym LIIAR which stands for Language, Ideology, Institution, Audience and Representation and looked at how this applys to our magazines:

Language: The visual communication. For example; the layout of the page, the pictures which are used, the title and how the text is set out.

Ideology: (The Values) So this would be things like; Respect, Achievement, Friendly. Which are all values of the college, which the magazine is to be based around. These are the main values which the college stand for and should be displayed in the college magazine. This will be displayed in the context of the media text.

Institution: Wyke college as a community.

Audience: The audience of the college magazine i believe would be any teenager from around the ages of 16-19. It would also be useful for students coming up from secondary schools as they could get a taste of what the college is like, whilst it would beneit the students already at the college as they could find out things that are going on which they may want to get involved in. It may also be useful to some parents who may want to see what sorts of things are going on at the college and what college life is like for the children, it may also influence them to start taking courses there. The students at Wyke College, staff at the college, 64% females at the college, 36% males at the college, students mainly from Hull and surrounding areas, universities, employee’s of the college. These are my magazines main audience and my stories are targeted towards these catogaries.

Representation: The college itself would be the main representation of the magazine, however it could also focus on the college's drama groups, football or sports teams etc and could represent them, so that the rest of the college know how these people are getting on and what sort of things they are doing, so that they can get behind them and support them.
