Analysis of three other magazines aimed at teenagers. 16-19

Empire Film Maazine.

The Empire magazine is a british film magazine published monthly by Emap consumer media. It has been running since 1989. It is the best selling film magazine in Britain outselling its competition Total film magazine. The magazine is distributed to the United Kingdom, Turkey and Australia and is edited by Mark Dinning.

The main purpose of the magazine is to print reviews of the latest films and create a list of the top ten films, this helps people who are regular film goers to pick out the films they are most interested in, and can read the reviews as to what some films are about and what other people thought of them which can help influence them when they are making their decision. The magazine also features some reviews of new console games, DVD's and new CD's and Albums. This suggests that the age range of the magazine is teenagers aged from around 16-19 as this age group go and see films at cinema with their friends and they are the age group who would also buy console games and CD's The content of the magazine suggests the age range.

The magazine has one of the transformers on the front cover. Again this figure stands out to film fans and is instantly recognisable and associated with the film 'The Transformers'. This then attracts the audience to purchase the magazine. The blue background look cool, and almost futeristic, this fits in well with the futeristic car-turning-robot figure which is on the front. The red title on the front stands out against the icy blue background. The title of the main film which is on the front cover is also in the bright red colour which stands out. This is directly underneath the picture of the transformer robot which shows people who do not know that the main picture on the front is the film called 'Transformers' to people who see the picture and might be interested in reading more and maybe even seeing the film. Some of the big names on the front cover such as 'Will Smith' and 'Beyonce' are also done in bold and highlighted in red so that they stand out as the big celebrity names help to attract people to purchase the magazine so that they can see what films their favourite celebrities are in. Or if they know a celebrity whose films they like they may be influenced to read about what they are up to now and what their next films are like.

The Manchester United magazine.

This magazine is published by the Manchester United F.C. The magazine content is surrounded around the latest club news, football results, fixtures, latest player news, League standings, match reviews, the MUFC shop where you can purchase official merchandise and pictures of the players. The magazine is targeted towards Manchester United fans.

Using a picture of Christiano Ronaldo on the front cover, he is an instantly recognisable player and anyone who see's this picture will instantly know that this magazine is targeted towards football, this will help them work out if this magazine appeals to them.
This type of layout would also be a great inspiration for the college magazine which i have been told to produce, as it has to include a main figure, eg, in this case it would be christiano ronaldo. The title at the top and then all of the other smaller pictures and stories around the main feature. This magazine is released monthly and the cost is £3.95. The main masthead is filled in red, this suggests its red due to the fact that this is the teams main colours. Below the main picture of Christiano Ronaldo is a smaller picture of him playing football in his manchester united kit. This may show the different lifestyles and personalities he has on and off the pitch, this would also suggest the mian interview with the star which is displayed on the front page. This may be to suggest that people purchase the magazine to get to know the real christiano ronaldo when he's off the pitch and living his life. It would also again attract Manchester United fans as they would like to get to know their hero.

The magazine also features a shopping page, where the fans and supporters can buy the clubs official merchandise and clothes directly from the club itself. All of the money which is made from this would probably pay for the production of the magazine. It uses it's own media product to increase sales for the club, they are advertising themselves in their own magazine.

Kerrang Magazine.

This magazine is targeted primarily around music lovers and teenagers, featuring all of the bands and artists whom target their music towards teenagers.

This magazine has again chosen to place a picture of a main celebrity figure which attracts people and draws them in. This figure is instantly recognisable to anyone who likes music and this influences them topurchase the magazine. Also if they are a fan of the main figure than this would encourage them to purchase the magazine. The main title which is placed across the main picture is coloured in white and done inbold so that it stands out and is eye catching. the producers have made it so that it is the first thing your eyes are drawn to.

They have also chosen to place smaller pictures around the magazine, these are the other stories included in the magazine and the brief headline which accompanies each picture gives the reader a brief introduction as to what the main story surrounding these artists is going to be about. They have also included a smaller headline running underneath the main story. This is because the two are connected, the small headline is still important, however not as interesting or as exciting as the main headline and so it is placed underneath, however because both of the stories are linked they are kept close together.

Analysis of the teachers 'Secondary' magazine.

Analysis Of the Secondary Teachers Magazine.
Firstly the magazine has three main stories running across the top of the magazine front cover. These stories are placed just above the title so that people who like the magazine notice the title and onlyhave to look up to see what the main stories are in this edition.
The Masthead of the magazine in this case is 'Secondary Teachers' this indicates again that the magazine is taregted towards secondary education teachers. It also gives the reader a general idea as to what the magazine is going to be about and if this interests them. By the looks of the front cover i would say this is a general magazine aimed at all teachers across the country and not just one school in general. This also highlights that the topics are not specific to one particular school and that the issues discussed are the issues that effect teachers worldwide.
The main picture is a medium close up of two boys sat in a changing room, with some football shirts hanging behind them, both of the boys have books and pencils in their hands. Printed on te front cover of the book is the Arsenal football club badge. This is instantly recognisable to all football and sports fans, this may suggest that this edition of the magazine is based around the sport side of education, as the books that both of the boys are holding suggests that they are working and shows that there is a link between sport and education. Both of the boys are dressed in full school uniform which again displays that the magazine is centred around education and the clothes that the boys are wearing links in with this idea. Both of the boys in the picture are looking at each other and smiling, whilst the boy on the left looks to be trying to solve some sort of problem which is written in his book. the expressions on the boys faces suggests that the magazine is trying to infrom the teachers to try and make their lessons fun and make learning fun as children learn better in that type of environment. Also on the back of the football shirts, which are the same colour as the Arsenal football club strip, which again makes them instantly recognisable, the words Literacy and Numeracy are printed in bold white which again stands out again stands out against the red of the shirt. These to words are instantly recognised as school subjects maths and english and people straight away register the link between the sports (i.e the shirt it's printed on) and the education link. (i.e the words Literacy and Numeracy).
This is backed up by the main headline which is coloured in Yellow with a bold font so that it stands out against the dark background and almost looks as if it is jumping off the page to attract the readers attention. The main headline says 'Playing to Learn'. This headline again suggests the link between playing, having fun and participating in sports with learning in education and getting good grades. This fits in with the main picture which shows the two boys surrounded by thinks which link with sports. All of this emphasises the magazines main headline and the mian message in the magazine which they are going to discuss.
The sub-headline which is in white and a smaller font has been placed directly beneath the main headline to show that the two are connected. 'How football can improve their maths and english'. This shows the direct link which the magazine is trying to portray between children playing football and sports can alter and improve childrens more academic subjects like maths and english. This sud-headline has been made white and shorter than the main headline as it is not as catchy or eye-catching as the main headline which is going to attract the readers, however it is still important so the size is still big and stands out, however it has been reduced so that it does not take the importance away from the main headline.
The magazine has many links like with the picture which indicate that the main purpose of the magazine is about education and secondary school teachers and how they can improve their lessons.

Foundation Portfolio - Preliminary Task

We have now started the begining of the foundation portfolio task, and for our first assignment we have to produce a college or school magazine based on the codes and conventions of magazines. We firstly looked at how the media concepts could be applied to our magazine. We looked at the acronym LIIAR which stands for Language, Ideology, Institution, Audience and Representation and looked at how this applys to our magazines:

Language: The visual communication. For example; the layout of the page, the pictures which are used, the title and how the text is set out.

Ideology: (The Values) So this would be things like; Respect, Achievement, Friendly. Which are all values of the college, which the magazine is to be based around. These are the main values which the college stand for and should be displayed in the college magazine. This will be displayed in the context of the media text.

Institution: Wyke college as a community.

Audience: The audience of the college magazine i believe would be any teenager from around the ages of 16-19. It would also be useful for students coming up from secondary schools as they could get a taste of what the college is like, whilst it would beneit the students already at the college as they could find out things that are going on which they may want to get involved in. It may also be useful to some parents who may want to see what sorts of things are going on at the college and what college life is like for the children, it may also influence them to start taking courses there. The students at Wyke College, staff at the college, 64% females at the college, 36% males at the college, students mainly from Hull and surrounding areas, universities, employee’s of the college. These are my magazines main audience and my stories are targeted towards these catogaries.

Representation: The college itself would be the main representation of the magazine, however it could also focus on the college's drama groups, football or sports teams etc and could represent them, so that the rest of the college know how these people are getting on and what sort of things they are doing, so that they can get behind them and support them.
